About Ovarian Cancer:
- #1 Cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States
- #5 Leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States
- A woman's lifetime risk of ovarian cancer is 1 in 67
- In 2012:
- 21,850 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer
- 13,850 women will die from ovarian cancer
- No Screening Test for ovarian cancer
- Vague and subtle symptoms (bloating, crampiing, fatigue, weight gain, indigestion) lead to difficult diagnosis
- Typically diagnosed in advanced stages
- Only 19% of cases are caught before the cancer has spread to the pelvic region
- Only 45% of women survive longer than 5 years
- However, the 5 year survival rate of cancer detected and treated early on is greater than 92%
